Surf Scoter, American Bittern, Goldeneye, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Little Grebes, Cormorant
Eglwys Nunydd Reservoir: imm m. Surf Scoter: All black except for white blobs on face. No white on nape. Bill stout, grey-blue. No wing or tail markings. Dived for long periods (47-52 secs), then surfaced for short periods (10-15 secs) before diving again. Also lots of Goldeneye, Tufted Duck, Pochard, Little Grebes, Cormorant.
Magor Nature Reserve, Gwent: American Bittern: Yellow bill with black running along upper edge of upper mandible, and from base of bill to eye. Startlingly white throat. Yellow iris. Brown crown. Black moustachial streak extending from base of bill down sides of neck, and square-ended. White breast and belly with large, rounded, chestnut streaks. Also darker brown streaks, similar shape on upper back and mantle. Rest of back and wing feathers orange-buff, mottled with black. Often crouched almost horizontal.
