Great Crested Grebes, Goosanders, Cormorants

A very calm morning, overcast but clearing after rain.  The lake was like a millpond, but there wasn't much to see; just three or four grebes and the usual Cormorants.  A wren showed briefly by the track, and two Oystercatchers were in the field behind the hide.  Back near the road, a Great Crested Grebe was fishing just offshore in the calm water.

The afternoon was a bit strange; the light appeared really good, with a dark cloudy backdrop and filtered sunshine from behind.  A couple of drake Goosander were off the straight wall, and later on in the early evening a superb rainbow was visible from the back garden.  There were huge numbers of Black-headed gulls flying high around over the lake, clearly visible in the sunshine against the dark cloud backdrop and rainbow, creating a surreal experience.
