Shoveler, Teal, Redwings
Dull and slightly drizzly this morning, but went for the usual pre-work walk anyway, and glad that I did - as I reached the reserve, a splendid male Shoveler was on view. It was always a little distant, even from the hide, and given the weather conditions, the light wasn't very good, but got a few record shots anyway.
I went back at lunchtime, hoping to get some better light and/or closer views, but the Shoveler was feeding along the back edge of the reserve most of the time, in and out of the foliage. At one point it got spooked and flew around, but came back to the middle of the reserve pool again. As I came out of the hide, a reasonable number (c.30 or so) Redwing were feeding at the very top of the field opposite the hide. No sign of the Water Rail today.
