Common Yellowthroat, Bald Eagle, Spotted Towhee, Sharp-shinned Hawk, American Robin, Western Grebes
Back at Power's Creek again in the morning, where I eventually managed to see one of the two recent Common Yellowthroats that Brad had advised me were present. Another adult Bald Eagle was seen here, and the usual party of waterbirds offshore - c. 60 American Coot, c. 6 Common Loons, 4 Western Grebes and around 8 Horned Grebe. Two Song Sparrows skulked low at the base of the bushes towards the point, where a Glaucous-winged Gull loafed.
Decided to try my luck at Kalamoir Park again, and stopped at the roadside pullover on Boucherie Road again. This time just California Quail were seen (c. 25).
At Kalamoir Park, a similar selection of birds to yesterday - c.10 Flickers, c.10 Black-billed Magpie, 1 Sharp-shinned Hawk, 2 juv. White-crowned Sparrows, a nice male Spotted Towhee, c.15 California Quail, and offshore, 2 Red-necked and 4 Horned Grebe. I strolled along a footpath skirting the edge of an escarpment and stopping to scan, realised that a Bald Eagle was perched just 20 yards or so behind me - I must have walked right beneath it! Fortunately it stayed put for long enough to get some decent photos, and when it ruffled its wings, a downy feather fell down allowing me to catch it. After a while, it took off, and I could hear the whoosh of its wings as it went by. Superb!
Driving back through the housing estate I noticed an American Robin on the top of a small conifer at the edge of a garden, and was able to get a couple of shots before it flew. Light wasn't very good unfortunately, but the best views so far.
Back at the Beach House, we were all getting into the car to go out for a wine-tasting trip, when Joanne spotted a Brown Bear on the drive, around 20 or 30 yards away! It was investigating the golf cart but before I could get my camera out, it had moved out of view down the track into the bushes and was lost from view completely. There were 2 Red-necked and around 5 Horned Grebes offshore.
