Spotted Sandpiper, Sedge Warbler, Whitethroat, Dunlin, Ringed Plover, Redshank, Little Grebe

After an abortive trip last night with Joanne to try to see the Elton Spotted Sandpiper (though we did see the Turnstone), I went again this morning with Andrew & Simon, though not before an early trip around the lake. The Redshank was present again at the back of the reserve, and a Little Grebe showed briefly just to the left of the hide. A Lapwing has been spending some time in front of the hide too.  I walked over to Shaw Moss, but it was very quiet, though when I reached Peanock Farm, a couple of Swallows allowed some fairly close approach, perching on a barbed wire fence.

At Elton, we had barely left the car park when Andrew picked up three Sandpipers on the nearby shoreline, immediately picking out the Spotted Sandpiper amongst them.  We spent two or three hours here, seeing the bird in question on a number of occasions, though never particularly close. It was still quite flighty, and spent some time down at the far southern part of the reservoir.  A handful of Dunlin and a Ringed Plover or two were relatively close to where we spent most of our time, As the sun broke through the clouds, we saw a Whitethroat in song, and then a couple of Sedge Warblers were singing, one of which sat up for us giving excellent views.
