Kite sp. Presumed Red Kite, Cuckoo (heard)
Just stopped at the Rowing Club car park to have a scan over the water before work at about 08:40 and was stunned to see a kite sp. flying NE low over the water. Caught me on the hop a bit, and was looking straight into low sun, so could only see a silhouette, but I felt it was probably Red Kite due to the fact I could see a cleft in the tail. Couldn't get any colour on it at all. I tried to grab a quick photo with my compact camera but lost valuable seconds and couldn't find it in the viewfinder. It sailed over the Wine Press and then towards Littleborough. I jumped in the car and chased it down Hollingworth Road but got stuck in traffic, but I could still see it distantly over the houses. I went up Blackstone edge hoping to get a wider viewpoint but unfortunately didn't see it again... The one that got away!
In the evening there was a message from Simon that a lady who lives near the lake felt she'd heard a Cuckoo in the Ealees/Whittaker area. I walked all round with no sign for about two hours, then just as I was walking back up Ealees to the car park, I heard it 'cuckoo', just once, from the direction of Whittaker.
